The State of the World

Its kinda funny,
watching the Olympic torch relay. Its like the spreading FT problem throughout the world: We are being overtaken by China-Chinese.

and the irony of all this, especially in Singapore's context is that,
hey, im an FT too!
or at least im a 3rd Generation foreigner, my grandfather was from China. Many people fail to realize/remember that Singapore is a Malay state!
here's a "wow i didnt know that! Explains why our National Anthem is in Malay!" moment

And hasn't this always been the case for Singapore? That people from all over the world congregate here and compliment the weaknesses of each other, making the nation prosperous?
So why the outlash now?

I think its 2 reasons:
1. The sudden sheer quantity
2. The blatant naivety and lack of understanding of the culture/context these people are in, which kinda translates into "Disrespect" for the locals

And I think the people are afraid... Afraid to be taken over, afraid to be undercut, afraid that to be cool in 5 years time you'll have to have a Chinese slang, and afraid that in 20 years time, the Chinese language will overtake English and become the mainstream language (now thats a thought, *shudders)

While that covers one issue, we get another one that less worrisome but more irritating: how "directed" and controlled Singapore media is.

I think only in Uniquely Singapore, you get news titles like these:
"Raising wages to address rising costs not a right solution"
"Its an Honest Mistake, our minister should not resign"

I'm thinking it would actually be quite realistic for the upcoming F1 Event to use an ERP Gantry for a start line, piff

These reporters ought to be run-overed by our elites one day, and the news written as "Reporter dies from accident, is charged $200,000 for emotional distress to elite"
